In general terms, a portable CarPlay monitor is the generational successor to the traditional PND (Portable Navigation Device). It replaces the old WIN-CE-based GPS navigation hardware with pre-loaded maps, and adopts a Linux-based display unit built for CarPlay and Android Auto screen projection. Since it relies on a smartphone to function, it is also widely known as an automotive smart monitor.
The concept of an in-vehicle smart monitor first emerged around 2018 with an 8.9-inch dual-camera dash-cam product launched by DDpai for the Huawei HiCar ecosystem. That device pioneered the mainstream integration of mobile-phone-to-car connectivity.
Portable CarPlay monitors now dominate the market for portable aftermarket car devices. Some industry insiders still refer to them as PNDs. Virtually every unit supporting CarPlay is also compatible with Android Auto, so we will not repeat this point in the following text. This category sells primarily in overseas markets. Common English product names include wireless CarPlay monitor, smart monitor, connected monitor system, and CarPlay monitor system. For simplicity, this article sticks to the term “portable CarPlay monitor”.
CarPlay and Android Auto were originally released in 2014. A small number of compatible production vehicles arrived on the market in 2015. Vehicle models supporting CPAA (short for CarPlay and Android Auto) have grown steadily and are now factory-fitted standard equipment on most new cars. Still, this roll-out took place gradually. Almost all vehicles built before 2015, plus a large share of cars produced before 2020, lack native CPAA support. Due to cost constraints and carmakers’ long-term strategies for building proprietary in-car ecosystems, many future vehicle models will ship without built-in CPAA functionality. This creates substantial market opportunities for aftermarket CarPlay-enabled hardware. Related product categories include retrofit head units, wired-to-wireless CarPlay dongles (for vehicles offering only wired CarPlay), replacement rear-view mirror displays, and smart monitors built for motorcycles. This article focuses specifically on the portable CarPlay monitor form factor.
According to industry records, the first-generation portable CarPlay monitors appeared around 2018, mostly powered by SUNPLUS chip solutions. Those early units were wired-only (requiring a physical cable connection to a smartphone), lacked Android Auto support, and sold for USD 300-400 on Amazon. Commercial-grade wireless CarPlay monitors were not widely available until the first half of 2022. Early releases ran on the SIGMASTAR platform, before ALLWINNER-based hardware entered the market. However, these early generations suffered from poor maturity, with frequent connection drops and unexpected reboots. By the second half of 2022, ALLWINNER solutions became stable enough for mass production and added support for front-and-rear dash-cam recording. Market demand then surged, and ALLWINNER quickly became the dominant chip platform.
As an early pioneer, SUNPLUS maintained respectable market share, yet its higher bill-of-material cost and lack of dash-cam functionality led to gradual decline. ROCKCHIP, a long-time competitor of ALLWINNER, saw several solution vendors roll out products with stronger hardware specifications. Nevertheless, high costs, imperfect product experience and late market entry prevented ROCKCHIP from mounting real competitive pressure. SIGMASTAR, an early entrant, largely vanished from the segment for reasons related to chip-maker policies and IDH partners. It was not until late 2023 that another solution provider re-entered the space with a differentiated solution targeting niche markets. Chip developers including Ezviz-affiliated Goke and Eeasytech, which have gained traction in dash-cam and security camera segments, are also preparing to launch competing hardware.
